🇭🇺 Hungarian Stuffed Peppers (Töltött Paprika)

📝 Ingredients

  • 6–8 sweet peppers (red or yellow)
  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef or pork
  • 1/2 cup rice (uncooked)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp paprika (Hungarian sweet paprika if possible)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp oil

🍳 Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling
In a bowl, mix ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Stuff the peppers
Cut off the tops and remove seeds. Fill each pepper with the meat mixture.
If you have leftover mixture, form small meatballs (just like in the image).
  3. Prepare the sauce
Heat oil in a pot, add tomato sauce and a little water. Stir in sugar, salt, and pepper.
  4. Cook
Place stuffed peppers and meatballs into the sauce.
Cover and simmer on low heat for about 45–60 minutes until the rice and meat are fully cooked.
  5. Serve
Serve hot with bread or mashed potatoes.

✨ Tips

  • Hungarian paprika is key for authentic flavor.
  • Some people add a little sour cream when serving.
  • The sauce should be slightly sweet and tangy—adjust sugar to taste.
